Investigation: SPT Dental Clinic

INVESTIGATION OF LOCAL DENTAL CLINIC CONTINUES

Health officials recommend testing

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) continues to work in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) on an investigation involving the SPT Dental Clinic located at 2682 Lamar Avenue in Memphis, TN and operated by Alfred Brown, DDS.

The investigation, triggered by a patient complaint to the Tennessee Board of Dentistry, identified breaches in infection control which may have put patients at risk for Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).To date, no specific infections have been linked to SPT Dental Clinic.

It is the responsibility of the local health department to assure the health of the public.  After careful review of clinic conditions and records, SCHD ordered the closure of Dr. Alfred Brown’s SPT Dental Clinic on Friday, July 1, 2016.  Individuals who received services from SPT Dental Clinic are strongly recommended to receive tests for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV.

Health officials will notify patients directly. Some records, however, may be incomplete. Any patient seen at the SPT Dental Clinic should be tested.

Shelby County residents will receive testing free of charge at the SCHD Cawthon Public Health Clinic, located at 1000 Haynes Street, Memphis, TN 38104. Testing services will begin Monday, July 25, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and continue weekdays until further notice.

Appointments can be made by calling the SCHD Investigation Hotline at (901) 222-9299 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Individuals who reside outside Shelby County should contact their physician or local health department to arrange testing.

Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV are serious medical conditions. People who are infected may not exhibit any symptoms of the disease for many years. It is possible patients might have been infected and not know it.  Even though patients who may not have been exposed may not feel ill or remember getting sick, they should be tested.

Operators are available via the SCHD Investigation Hotline Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. to answer question from anyone who received services at Dr. Alfred Brown’s SPT Dental Clinic.
